Days of Glory
1945. Italy/Switzerland. Directed by Giuseppe De Santis, Mario Serandrei, Marcello Pagliero, Luchino Visconti. This gritty documentary exposes the violence that swept across Italy from 1943 to 1945, focusing on March 24, 1944, when more than 335 Italian prisoners were executed in retaliation for an anti-Nazi attack. With its rejection of the nation's Fascist past and embrace of its democratic future, this shocking film employed the emerging cinematic language of Neorealism to boldly polemical ends. In Italian; English subtitles. 70 min.
