A tragedy strikes when one hundred girls apply for a job as a typist and the staircase they pile up on suddenly collapses. Some are lightly wounded, some seriously injured, and one dies—the consequences on the lives of the applicants are vividly brought to life in this group portrait of young women struggling in the new urban work force.
