  • The Godless Girl

1928. USA. Directed by Cecil B. DeMille. Screenplay by Jeanie Macpherson. With Lina Basquette, George Duryea, Marie Prevost, Eddie Quillan. DeMille's last film of the silent era, and his biggest domestic box office flop, is a striking mélange of atheism and religious extremism in public schools, combined with an indictment of the juvenile reformatory system—all served up with the distinctive DeMille touches of sensationalism and piety. Preserved with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts. Print courtesy George Eastman House. Silent, with musical accompaniment. Approx. 128 min.
