  • Step Forward

2004. Venezuela. Written and directed by Elia Schneider. With Roque Valero, Edgar Ramírez, Ramiro Maneses. Coproduction with Chile, Spain, and Uruguay. This innovative low-budget action-adventure follows two soldiers, one Venezuelan and one Colombian, as they depend on each other for survival in the midst of an interminable drug war. An unlikely friendship develops despite geopolitical and personal differences (one soldier is a convicted criminal, the other clean-cut and patriotic). With its deft mixture of action and satire, this film uncovers the absurdity of war by establishing a common bond between two people of separate nationalities and opposite personalities. In Spanish; English subtitles. 105 min.
