2004. Chile. Directed by Andrés Wood. With Matías Quer, Ariel Mateluna, Manuela Martelli, Federico Luppi. Coproduction with Spain. Fueled by revolutionary fervor in 1973 Chile, a local headmaster seeks to dismantle the class divisions of Santiago by allowing children from the illegal shantytowns to attend his elite private school. An unlikely friendship forms between eleven-year-olds Pedro Machuca, who comes from a poverty-stricken family, and Gonzalo Infante, who lives in a wealthy neighborhood. But as the boys learn to respect each other despite their different backgrounds, the dream of integration is challenged by practical difficulties and the social confrontation taking place in Chilean society. In Spanish; English subtitles. 129 min.
