The Night of the Sunflowers
2006. Spain. Written and directed by Jorge Sánchez-Cabezudo. With Mariano Alameda, Celso Bugallo, Nadia Casado. Coproduction with Portugal. In a small Spanish village, the discovery of prehistoric caves that could boost tourism coincides with the brutal rape of a woman. The events trigger a chain reaction that reveals the dark heart of the alienated community. First-time director Sánchez-Cabezudo displays virtuosity as a storyteller, structuring tangled plotlines in six episodes that juggle opposing motivations. Elegantly conceived and marked by ambiguity, the film poignantly addresses age-old moral questions within the contemporary divide between rural and urban life. In Spanish; English subtitles. 126 min.
