  • Fados

2007. Portugal. Directed by Carlos Saura. With Mariza, Camané, Carlos do Carmo, Lila Downs, Caetano Veloso, Miguel Poveda, Chico Buarque, Lura, Toni Garrido. Coproduction with Spain. In 2005, following Flamenco (1995) and Tango (1998), Saura started research to complete his trilogy on the modern urban song, focusing on the Portuguese fado, a synthesis of several types of music that emerged at the end of the nineteenth century. In Fados, the venerated Spanish director combines image, dance, song, and performance to portray the birth and continuous development of suburban and port music—he even brings it into today's music scene with a rap fado. In Portuguese; English subtitles. 87 min.
