  • The River

1951. India. Directed by Jean Renoir. Screenplay by Rumer Godden, Jean Renoir. Based on the novel by Rumer Godden. With Nora Swinburne, Esmond Knight. The sensuality of the Indian landscape shot outside of Calcutta and along the fertile banks of Ganges River enhances this story of romance, rivalry and the coming of age of a teenage British girl and her colonial family. The tension between Eastern exoticism and Western tradition is hypnotic and seductive, especially when accompanied by a musical score Renoir recorded live while on location. Restored by The Academy Film Archive in cooperation with The British Film Institute and Janus Films. Restoration funding provided by The Film Foundation and The Hollywood Foreign Press Association. 99 min.
