  • A Matter of Life and Death (Stairway to Heaven)

1946. Great Britain. Written and directed by Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger. With David Niven, Kim Hunter. Moments before his plane crashes, Peter Carter makes radio contact with a woman named June. The heavenly "conductor" who is dispatched to Earth to retrieve Peter is late, thus allowing a meeting between the couple. The stairway to Heaven is an impossibly long escalator, and the celestial environs are monochromatic, mischievously subverting the customary notion of paradise. 105 min.
