  • The Grapes of Wrath

1940. USA. Directed by John Ford. Screenplay by Nunnally Johnson, based on the novel by John Steinbeck. Cinematography by Gregg Toland. With Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell, John Carradine, Charles Grapewin, John Qualen. Possibly the best film adaptation of a great novel ever made, Ford’s film sticks very closely to Steinbeck’s book and perfectly captures the Depression ethos. Ford and Darwell won Oscars, and Fonda is perfectly cast as Tom Joad, the inspiring and revolutionary hero. 129 min.
