    1957. Great Britain. Directed by David Lean. With Alec Guinness, William Holden, Jack Hawkins. He's back! The septuagenarian Hayakawa returned to international prominence in Lean's multi-Oscar-winning World War II epic. As a brutal prison camp commander, Hayakawa was nominated for an Oscar himself, which paved the way for him to make six more films in the West before finally returning to Japan. 161 min.
