The Cheat
1915. USA. Directed by Cecil B. DeMille. Cinematography by Alvin Wyckoff. With Fannie Ward, Jack Dean. Hayakawa's breakthrough role made him one of Hollywood's leading men, with a long-term contract to Jesse L. Lasky's Feature Play Company. The film also facilitated future work with DeMille, DeMille's brother William, and Marshall Neilan, all major directors of the period. Far more economical in style and narrative than DeMille's later work, and benefiting greatly from Wyckoff's "Rembrandt" lighting, The Cheat, a portrait of corruption and perversity unrestricted by either sex or race, became a huge sensation. Silent. Approx. 65 min.
