Pink Flamingos
1972. USA. Written and directed by John Waters. With Divine, David Lachary, Mary Vivian Pearce, Mink Stole, Edith Massey. Waters's good-natured, adults-only burlesque about "the filthiest people alive" was one of the first midnight movies, and its popular success helped establish the fledgling independent movie company New Line Cinema. This exuberant affront to decency featuring a gender-bending heroine (the inimitable Divine) jauntily extended the notion of permissibility in American comedy. 108 min.
