Bed and Sofa
1926. USSR. Directed by Abram Room. Screenplay by Room, Victor Shklovsky. With Nikolai Batalov, Ludmilla Semyonova. Due to Moscow's housing shortage, a husband, who has come to take his wife for granted, brings home a friend to sleep on the sofa. Before long, the husband is sleeping on the sofa and the wife is pregnant—and not sure which one is the father. This satiric comedy was not widely seen outside of the Soviet Union due to its frank portrayal of adultery and abortion. Silent, with English intertitles. 80 min.
