  • Au hasard Balthazar

1966. France. Written and directed by Robert Bresson. With Anne Wiazemsky, Walter Green. Believed by many to be Bresson's "supreme masterpiece" (J. Hoberman), Au hasard Balthazar is a religious allegory conveyed through the life and death of a donkey. Baptized "Balthazar" by three young children at the start of the film, the donkey is soon thrown into a life of successive labors and abuses at the hands of different owners. In French; English subtitles. 95 min.
