  • Pixote: The Law of the Weakest

1981. Brazil. Directed by Hector Babenco. Written by Jorge Durán, Babenco. With Fernando Ramos da Silva, Jorge Julião, Marília Pêra. This devastating and deeply affecting movie became a sensation with its uncompromising portrayal of São Paulo slum orphans and their mind-numbing, survival-of-the-fittest routine of stealing, pushing, pimping, and killing. Completely devoid of any sentimentality and inspired by Italian Neorealism, Babenco's episodic urban saga still manages to illuminate its urchins' doomed lives with lightning flashes of innocence, joy, and compassion. Portuguese; English subttitles. 128 min.
