Set in sixteenth-century Japan, Kurosawa's epic reinvents King Lear as an ailing warlord ready to divide his considerable wealth between three sons. Ran features spectacular battle set pieces and elaborate medieval costumes that Kurosawa conceived through hundreds of preparatory paintings and sketches. 160 min.
