    2005. China. Written and directed by Ying Liang. With Xu Yun, Liu Xiaopei. Ying Liang's impressive debut is a stark and intimate portrait of a common man swept up in unrelenting urban progress. Made on a microbudget but ambitious in scope, the film follows Xu Yun, a village boy, as he ventures to the city, armed only with two ducks, to look for his supposedly rich father. Navigating menace at every turn while facing the threat of an impending flood, his search culminates in an irrevocably tragic end. In Chinese, English subtitles. 100 min.
