    1960. Roberto Rossellini. Screenplay by Sergio Amidei, Rossellini, et al. With Renzo Ricci. Celebrating Italy’s centennial, this spectacle, a dry run for Rossellini’s subsequent didactic works, witnesses Giuseppe Garibaldi’s liberation of the south from the Bourbons and the Risorgimento (Italian unification). "Of all my films I’m proudest of Viva l’Italia. I consider it important as a work of research, the most carefully done of all my films" (Rossellini). In Italian, English subtitles. 129 min.
