Where Is Liberty?
1954. Roberto Rossellini. Adapted from an idea by Rossellini. This dark satire starring Toto, a comic actor much beloved in Italy, is according to Rossellini, Europa 51s inverse: an innocent copes with the meanness and ruthlessness of postwar society. A mild-mannered man, having served twenty years for slitting the throat of a friend who seduced his wife, is released from prison. What he finds on the outside is so disheartening and discouraging he attemptswith little successto return to jail. In Italian, English subtitles. 91 min.
