Stromboli
1949. Roberto Rossellini. Screenplay by Rossellini, Sergio Amidei, et al. With Ingrid Bergman, Mario Vitale. Bergman, impressed by Rome Open City and Paisan, wrote to Rossellini that if ever he needed a Swedish actress who spoke English well, she was ready to work with him. Rossellini responded with Stromboli, about an Eastern European refugee who quits a postwar displaced persons camp by marrying an unrefined fisherman from the titular small volcanic island, and soon falls into despair. 105 min.
