1975. USA. Directed by Steven Spielberg. Music by John Williams. With Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, Lorraine Gary, Murray Hamilton. For better or worse, Jaws, like Bonnie and Clyde, is a landmark in the modern history of cinema. In fact, one might argue that Jaws was as revolutionary in its way as D. W. Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation had been 60 years earlier. The horror film had always been a staple in Hollywood moviemaking, but Spielberg’s film added a new dimension to the genre by planting his fish tale in the midst of humdrum American reality rather than some supernatural fantasy. 124 min.
