Connected through their profane humor and mocking of the status quo, Schlingensief and Zedd could seem like raucous twins separated at birth. Ranging from young Schlingensief playing the German national anthem on a trumpet while standing in the snow (Für Elise) to an irreverent homage to German Expressionism featuring an encounter between a vampire and an Indian chief, Schlingensief’s 16mm short films from the 1980s are as ludicrous and brilliant as his feature films.
