  • McCabe & Mrs. Miller

1971. USA. Directed by Robert Altman. With Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, Rene Auberjonois, Keith Carradine, Shelley Duvall. In a sense a revisionist Western, Altman’s film (like almost all of his works) is so idiosyncratic as to defy genre classification. In direct contrast to the romantic vision of Peter Bogdanovich in his The Last Picture Show, Altman is hell-bent on demythologizing America and its cinema. Beatty, by this time, was about the biggest star in Hollywood, and Altman emerges from the pack of independent filmmakers following the passing of the studio system. 121 min.
