  • The Merchant of Four Seasons

1971. West Germany. Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. With Hans Hirschmuller, Irm Hermann, Hanna Schygulla, Andrea Schober. Although Fassbinder had already directed more than a dozen films, this was the movie that put him on the map, at least in America, where it was shown in the New York Film Festival. He would ultimately become the most acclaimed German director since the Weimar triumvirate of F. W. Murnau, Fritz Lang, and G. W. Pabst. Here, we get an early taste of his stylized homage to Hollywood and its methods, flavored by a leftist political slant that would make him important, but always controversial. In German; English subtitles. 88 min.
