  • Out of the Past

1947. USA. Directed by Jacques Tourneur. Screenplay by Jeffrey Homes (Daniel Mainwaring), adapted from his novel Build My Gallows High. Cinematography by Nicholas Musuraca. With Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, Kirk Douglas, Rhonda Fleming, Richard Webb, Steve Brodie. This authentic film noir speaks to F. W. Murnau’s lasting influence 20 years after Sunrise. Tourneur, son of the major French director Maurice Tourneur, who had been a force in silent Hollywood, had made highly atmospheric films (Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie, Leopard Man) for Val Lewton. Italian-born Musuraca had also worked with Lewton and helped establish an RKO “look” for the seminal noirs the studio produced. 97 min.
