1932. USA. Directed by Josef von Sternberg. With Marlene Dietrich, Clive Brook, Anna May Wong, Warner Oland, Eugene Pallette. The apex of the Sternberg/Garmes collaboration, this tale of revolutionary China is one of the most beautifully photographed films ever made, and the ultimate example of how Hollywood could enhance a star’s natural beauty through its expertise in the aesthetics of shadow. Dietrich never looked more ravishing, and Sternberg (as in Morocco) remains true to his uniquely dazzling and unapologetic romanticism. Sternberg was nominated for an Oscar, and Garmes won one. 80 min.
