  • The Phantom Chariot

1921. Sweden. Written and directed by Victor Sjöström. Based on the novel by Selma Lagerlof. Cinematography by Julius Jaenzon. With Sjöström, Hilda Borgstrom, Astrid Holm. Jaenzon worked on several of the masterpieces of both Sjöström and Mauritz Stiller, the two titans of Swedish cinema. The Phantom Chariot can be called Dickensian, but it also anticipates the non-linear structure of Citizen Kane. (Like Orson Welles, Sjöström was his own leading man.) As Roger Manvell has suggested, the film’s multilayered “visuals surpass virtually all that been achieved in cinematography by 1920.” Silent film, musical accompaniment by Ben Model, English intertitles. 70 min.
