1919. USA. Directed by D. W. Griffith. Cinematography by Billy Bitzer. With Lillian Gish, Richard Barthelmess, Donald Crisp. From their earliest days at the Biograph Studio, Griffith and Bitzer had been experimenting with new lighting techniques, many of which later influenced a host of Griffith disciples. This inventiveness reached fruition in The Avenging Conscience, The Birth of a Nation, and, especially, in Broken Blossoms, with its atmospheric evocation of the denizens of Victorian London. Silent film, musical accompaniment by Ben Model. 89 min.
