1961. USA. Directed by Robert Rossen. Photographed by Eugene Schufftan. With Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie, George C. Scott. Rossen (1908–1966) was a New Yorker caught up in the “blacklist,” which stunted his career and probably his life. He was only able to make one more film after The Hustler, which had won him the Best Director award from the New York Film Critics. (He also won an Oscar for All the King’s Men.) Newman was a remarkably busy actor, having made a dozen films in six years, and this is one of his most memorable roles. 135 min.
