  • Young Soul Rebels

1991. Great Britain. Directed by Isaac Julien. London in 1977, the week of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Chris and Caz run a pirate radio station, playing Parliament Funkadelic into the night. When a friend is murdered while cruising in a park, the city is already lined with bobbies and Union Jack flags; it’s black soul boys versus white punk kids, but Julien adeptly muddies these tensions with the youthful vagaries of friendship and desire on the street and on the dance floor. Winner of the Semaine de la Critique prize at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival. 105 min.
