  • Saving Mr. Banks

2013. USA. Directed by John Lee Hancock. In 1961 Walt Disney invited P. L. Travers, the author of Mary Poppins, to Los Angeles, hoping she would sell the rights to her book so that he could turn it into a movie musical. The very proper accepts Disney’s invitation, but with no intention of allowing him to make a film of her book—especially one that might include dreaded animation! Travers's challenging childhood in Australia, into which arrived a real-life Mary Poppins figure to assist the crumbling family, reveals a softer side of the author. Emma Thompson’s remarkable performance as the chilly-to-cordial Travers is the centerpiece of the film, especially when she is singing the unforgettable Sherman brothers song “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.” Courtesy of Walt Disney Studios Pictures. 126 min.
