1964. Denmark. Directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer. With Nina Pens Rode, Bendt Rothe, Ebbe Rode. Dreyer’s final film, made in his mid-seventies, is highly experimental, eschewing close-ups in favor of long takes and traveling shots. As the great Danish film historian Ib Monty points out, Dreyer’s film is extremely modern stylistically and in its feminism, both of which caused it to be shamefully booed at its Cannes premiere. It is now generally recognized as one the central expressions of one of cinema’s most sublime directors. In Danish; English subtitles. 115 min.
