Though he was a documentarian, Chris Marker (1921–2012), was among the most idiosyncratic of filmmakers, perhaps more essayist than artist. In these films, two of his earliest and most well known works, he gives a sense of why Alain Resnais called him “the prototype of the twenty-first-century man.”
