2013. Great Britain. Directed by Stephen Frears. Screenplay by Steve Coogan. With Coogan, Judi Dench. Coogan’s reluctant reporter, chasing what seems to be a commonplace “human interest” story, could be a stand-in for the jaded cinephile—convinced they’ve seen it all and bored to death by “sweet” stories. But Coogan’s brilliant script and Stephen Frears’s characteristically nimble directorial touch allow this heart-wrenching true story to engage in unexpected ways. Perhaps their biggest triumph is allowing Dench to inhabit the seemingly unremarkable Philomena—a small-town woman in search of the son that was taken from her at a convent more than 40 years prior—in a completely genuine, un-ironic performance that will disarm even the most knowing audiences, allowing us to be immersed in this most “human” of films.
