2013. USA. Written and directed by Destin Cretton. With Brie Larson, John Gallagher Jr., Kaitlyn Deaver, Rami Malek, Keith Stanfield. The surprise hit of awards season is an independent film that premiered at the South by Southwest festival, where it won both jury and audience awards. Playing a group of children in foster-care facility, the young cast seamlessly blends to form a group of individuals with sharply delineated personalities and problems, all under the guidance of Grace (Brie Larson, in a breakout performance), a passionately committed 20-something supervisor with serious issues of her own. Sensitively directed by Destin Cretton—who also wrote the film, based on his own award-winning short—the film finds truth, humor, and heartbreak in the community it creates. The aptly named Grace's humanity informs her every gestures and action, and Larson is equally to incrementally reveal Grace's wounded self in a raw performance that cuts to the bone. Her performance earned Larson the Best Actor Award at the Gotham Awards this past November. Courtesy of Cinedigm Entertainment. 96 min.
