2013. USA. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Simple grace and elegance are extremely elusive qualities in studio-produced pictures. That Gravity has these qualities, as well as astonishing 3-D effects, and is set in space makes it an even more impressive accomplishment. Director Cuarón is known for his ability to maintain focus on complex characters while immersing them in rich cinematic and narrative landscapes. Here, working from a script written with his son Jonas, he strips away the background and demands that his actors (George Clooney and a revelatory Sandra Bullock) create their characters in a limitless vacuum. The search for a sense of place and secure attachment takes on layered meaning in what is by far the most exhilarating film of the year. Courtesy of Warner Bros. 91 min.
