  • Captain Phillips

2012. USA. Directed by Paul Greengrass. Based upon Richard Phillips and Stephan Talty’s book A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS and Dangerous Days at Sea, the film stars Tom Hanks as Captain Phillips, a solid Vermont family man who wants only to navigate the Maersk Alabama from Oman to Kenya without incident, collect his pay, and head home. While in open and unprotected waters near Somalia, the Alabama is hijacked by an unlikely band of violent pirates wearing rubber flip-flops and toting automatic weapons. Even though we know the outcome, Captain Phillips is a true knuckle-biter, filled with suspense and tension. Courtesy of Columbia Pictures. 134 min.
