Polanski, who turned 80 in August, is one of our greatest living cinema treasures. In these early shorts and his first feature, we see both a throwback to the Surrealists and a prescient artist anticipating our contemporary absurdity. Already victimized by the tragedy of the Holocaust and on the cusp of a life filled with trauma, young Polanski was one of the few authentically visionary talents to emerge in modern cinema.
