2010. USA. Directed by Martin Scorsese. With Leonardo Di Caprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer, Max von Sydow. Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, set in the early 1950s, the film’s labyrinthine plot, asylum setting, and house-of-mirrors character psychology pays homage to Hollywood noir of the 1940s. Shot largely in and around the derelict Medfield State Hospital in Massachusetts, the darkly atmospheric production design evokes a time and place both past and otherworldly. Ferretti rebuilt most of the hospital’s interior rooms and exterior entrances to achieve Scorsese’s Hitchcock-inspired vision, a sense of unease complemented by the construction of the asylum’s massive perimeter guard wall, adjacent graveyard, and seaside cliffs. 138 min.
