2005. USA. Directed by Christopher Nolan. Screenplay by Nolan, David S. Goyer. With Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Katie Holmes. Nolan's Batman trilogy begins, appropriately, with the story of how Batman came to be. Haunted by the memory of a swarm of bats, Bruce Wayne, orphaned when his parents are murdered by a punk name Joe Chill, is raised by the family butler, Alfred. Fast-forward 14 years, and Wayne is a ubiquitous figure in Gotham City—with an equally ubiquitous alter ego. Nolan's take is visually closer to the gritty, late 1980s style of the comic books than were the previous Batman films. 141 min.
