  • Some Like It Hot

1959. USA. Directed by Billy Wilder. With Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, Marilyn Monroe, Joe E. Brown, George Raft. Wilder’s comedy, based on a 1935 French film, is a throwback to the Weimar-era permissiveness toward things like cross-dressing. Although Wilder and other Weimar artists would continue to work in America for decades, there is a sense by the end of the 1950s that the nature of filmmaking was changing and, perhaps, something irreplaceable was being lost. The French New Wave and its counterparts elsewhere (including in Germany) paid tribute to predecessors, but much that was idiosyncratic would gradually give way to cinema that was less personal and (arguably) less interesting. 119 min.
