1948. USA. Directed by Jacques Tourneur. Story by Curt (Kurt) Siodmak. With Merle Oberon, Robert Ryan, Charles Korvin, Paul Lukas, Reinhold Schünzel, Fritz Kortner. French-born Tourneur showed he was a clear heir to Weimar cinema with such Expressionist classics as I Walked with a Zombie and Out of the Past. This postwar anti-Nazi spy thriller provided work to many Weimar veterans. Siodmak (brother of Robert) had worked as a screenwriter and director, in addition to penning numerous horror and science fiction novels. Schünzel directed the earliest film in this series (Viktor und Viktoria), and Kortner had also been a Weimar director and major actor (his credits included G. W. Pabst’s Pandora’s Box). The music was by Frederick Hollander (Friedrich Hollaender), composer for The Blue Angel and several of Marlene Dietrich’s Hollywood films. 86 min.
