  • Letter from an Unknown Woman

1948. USA. Directed by Max Ophuls. With Joan Fontaine, Louis Jourdan, Mady Christians, Marcel Journet. The most romantic and beautiful of Ophuls’s Hollywood films, Letter to an Unknown Woman was photographed by Franz Planer, who also shot the Weimar classic Liebelei. (He had also worked with Michael Curtiz in the course of his long Weimar career.) Planer had worked on Ophuls’s The Exile and several excellent noir films, including Robert Siodmak’s Criss Cross and Phil Karlson’s 99 River Street. 90 min.
