1942. USA. Directed by Michael Curtiz. With Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Raines, Conrad Veidt, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet. Casablanca is a treasure trove of former Weimar actors. In addition to the greats, Conrad Veidt (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Waxworks, Hands of Orlac) and Peter Lorre (M), the cast includes S. Z. Sakall and Ludwig Stossel. In a sense, the film comments on the real-life problems of many of its contributors, whose lives had been so disrupted in the aftermath of Weimar. Budapest-born Curtiz had made several films in Germany, most notably Biblical epics, before coming to Hollywood in 1926. 102 min.
