Ashes and Diamonds
1958. Poland. Directed by Andrzej Wajda. With Zbigniew Cybulski, Ewa Kryzjewska, Waclaw Zastrzezynski, Adam Pawlikowski. Wajda’s study of postwar Polish society was revolutionary in both a political and a cinematic sense. Cybulski somewhat emulated James Dean on screen—and in his tragic early death. Wajda has gone on to become the grand old man of Polish cinema, the founder of a film school, and the mentor of Agnieszka Holland and Roman Polanski. In Polish; English subtitles. 96 min.
