The Living Koheiji
1982. Japan. Directed by Nobuo Nakagawa. Screenplay by Nakagawa, based on a play by Senzaburo Suzuki. With Fumihiko Fujima, Junko Miyashita, Shoji Ishibashi. After a thirteen-year hiatus, Nakagawa, a master of the immensely popular Japanese ghost genre, returned to the studio one last time to make his most intense, and perhaps most beautiful, film. Nakagawa stages his love triangle among a traveling Kabuki player, his wife, and her lover—a drama about crimes of passion—as a theatrically stylized yet intimate play between illusion and reality. Print lent by The Japan Foundation; courtesy Toho Distribution. In Japanese; English subtitles. 78 min.
