1962. Japan. Directed by Kaneto Shindo. Screenplay by Shindo, based on a novel by Yaeko Nogami. With Taiji Tonoyama, Nobuko Otowa, Kei Sato. Four tempest-tossed fisherman, adrift and delirious with hunger, turn on each other in their fight for survival. A pioneer of independent film since the early 1950s, Kaneto Shindo exploited the Art Theater Guild’s characteristically low budget and skeletal crew to his advantage, deftly conjuring the desperate intensity of a claustrophobic ship setting. Print lent by the National Film Center of The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; courtesy Kindai Eiga Kyokai. In Japanese; English subtitles. 117 min.
In the Film exhibition Art Theater Guild and Japanese Underground Cinema, 1960–1986
