2012. USA. Directed by Tim Burton. With Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Martin Short, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara. For his third stop-motion animated feature (second as producer and first as director), Burton returns to a story he first filmed as a live-action short in 1984, with the addition of previously unrealized characters he created for True Love (c. 1981–83) and Disney's The Black Cauldron (1985). Riffing on Mary Shelley’s classic tale and on his own love for sci-fi movie monsters and mad scientists, Burton depicts the comic mayhem that engulfs suburbia when a young Victor Frankenstein brings his beloved dog, Sparky, back to life after a tragic accident. Despite its 3-D trappings, the film may be best appreciated as a small-scale, warmhearted reverie on Burton’s childhood in Burbank, CA—a location many viewers may recognize from his iconic Edward Scissorhands (1990).
