A sensual, intuitive feeling for the materials and processes of filmmaking have been trademarks of Ernie Gehr’s films since the late l960s, including such masterpieces as Serene Velocity and Side/Walk/Shuttle. In this selection of new works, Gehr exhibits a similar uncanny ability to use digital media to depict and transform his chosen subjects into cinematic pieces of wonder and magic. Departure begins with train travel. Picture Taking starts with urban sightseeing. In Work in Progress, it’s the continual transformation of the urban landscape, and in Auto Collider XV, the feel of velocity from an automobile racing through an urban setting. All selections were shown at the New York and Toronto international film festivals, but they are presented here as a single program for the first time.
In the Film exhibition The Contenders 2012
